You must be 23 years old or older and not currently enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate degree program.

APPLICATION COMPONENTS DEFINITIONS: STATEMENTS
Letter of Intent/ Project Proposal/Work Statement: A 500-word statement describing what you intend to accomplish during three months of residency. For example, this can be a series of works and/or methods to be explored during your time here at Guttenberg Arts. We are interested in how having a Guttenberg Arts residency will benefit your practice and are aware that projects change and evolve.
Artist Statement: A 500-word statement directly related to the work sample submitted. Explain your clear artistic vision to the panel as it is exemplified in your work samples. Work statements will be available for panelists to read in later rounds as they view your work sample.
CV: A résumé that details your artistic career; education, exhibitions, residencies, awards, etc. Résumés are available for panelists to reference in later rounds as a way for them to contextualize the work. An artist’s career point, publication, or exhibition history is not a determining factor in this award.
FORMATTING OF WORK SAMPLES: Digital Images
File name: Images numbered in the order you would like them to be seen and labeled according to the titles on your list of work. (Example- “01untitled.jpg, 02sunset.jpg, 03Portrait.jpg”)
File size: No larger than 5.0 MB (each image)

No composite images will be reviewed. A composite image is a single image file that is comprised of multiple images. Images of diptychs, installations, and multi-part works are not considered composites and are permissible.
Images will be shown in the order they are uploaded and are projected at roughly 30" x 40" per image via high definition digital projectors. Moderators will read aloud the materials, dimensions, and date of the image; panelists will have access to this information as well.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A SPACE AND TIME ARTIST RESIDENCY?
Space and Time Artist Residency at Guttenberg Arts provides artists with a $1,200.00 USD stipend to cover material, travel, and housing in conjunction with 24/7 shared access to a 4,500 sq ft. professionally equipped workspace for the visual arts including printmaking, dark room and ceramics for three months in Guttenberg, New Jersey. Artists will also be given a one month final group show as well as studio visits from accomplished professionals from the art world. Each artist is required to give a free and open to the public artist lecture or workshop towards the close of their three month residency. We highly recommend a site visit to our building. Artists are selected by a blind jury of arts professionals on the merits of their work.
HOW ARE ARTISTS SELECTED?
Artists are chosen based on the single criterion of work that demonstrates a compelling vision as defined by the assembled panel's collective opinion. Materials are reviewed and voted on by the panelists in elimination rounds which produce a smaller pool for each round. An artist's advancement is a product of the collective vote of the panel. A single panelist cannot ensure an applicant's success or failure. Panel proceedings are overseen by the Guttenberg Arts Staff and by Guttenberg Arts Board of Trustees. Panelists' names are kept confidential until the awards are announced. Artists are awarded residencies at all career levels. We do not give individual feedback. HOW IS WORK REVIEWED?
Applications are available for panelists to read as they review support materials. An artist's digital images are projected in the order uploaded by the applicant. Moderators will read aloud the materials, dimensions, and date of the images to the panel.
HOW ARE PANELS ASSEMBLED?
Panelists change each round and are comprised of three or four art world professionals.
DO WE ACCEPT INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS?
Yes, however we currently do not provide housing so international artists will have to find housing through sites like craigslist and airbnb. In the past, artists have used a portion of their stipend to pay for rent. Other options include staying with family or friends who live within commuting distance. We also do not provide visas, however the 3 month residency falls within a vacation visa.
ARTIST PARTICIPATION EXPECTATIONS
Artist in Resident participants are expected make a serious commitment to the program for the entire three-month session and to utilize the studio actively and consistently (on average artists are in the studio 20 hours per week, minimum). In addition, artists are required to participate in a final group exhibition, plus give an artist talk or give one free workshop open to the public (this can be at the studio or at a local community center). It is vital to the success of the program that Artist in Resident participants fully take advantage of the unique resources we are able to provide. For this reason, Artist in Resident participants cannot simultaneously participate in another residency or degree-granting program while participating in Guttenberg Arts Space and Time Artist Residency.
