Guttenberg Arts is a community-based organization dedicated to facilitating artistic evolution and creative opportunities for new and established artists of all ages and backgrounds. Guttenberg Arts is equipped for printmaking, painting/drawing, sculpture, and ceramics; and offers artist residencies, exhibitions, classes, workshops, and a community garden program–helping artists to grow and thrive in Northern New Jersey. Our multi-disciplinary 4,500 sq. ft. artist studio, located in Guttenberg, New Jersey, was founded in 2014.

The core programs of Guttenberg Arts are: Space +Time Artist Residency, Laboratorio workshops and classes, Exhibitions, and GuttenGarden community garden. Our programs have grown out of feedback and direct engagement with artists and area residents.

from BUilding buildings to building communities

Guttenberg Arts was founded by Dan and Sara Barteluce, two Hudson County natives. Following a career in architecture, Dan and Sara turned their focus back to the same community that positively influenced their childhoods. During this time, their son Matt Barteluce and his business partner Russ Spitkovsky began publishing art and literature journal Carrier Pigeon, which cultivated a large community of artists. Carrier Pigeon offered a platform to showcase new and interesting work, but contributing artists frequently described the difficulty of maintaining a sustainable career in the arts due to the lack of space and time to develop meaningful work.

In response to the need for affordable space and resources, Dan and Sara purchased an industrial building in Guttenberg in 2013 and founded Guttenberg Arts as a 501c3 foundation together with Matt, Russ, and consulting artists Bruce Waldman and Doug Depice. The building was completed in May 2014, and launched the Space + Time Artist Residency with three pilot residents. In 2019 Russ and Matt built Guttengarden, a community garden with raised beds for dye plant and vegetable growing in the yard behind the studio.

Today, Guttenberg Arts is a public 501c3 serving over 4,000 artists and art-appreciators from seven New Jersey and two New York counties per year through accessible arts and garden programming.
