Upcycle Coalition (11/23)
Join Upcycle Coalition for a hands-on workshop where we’ll explore the art of Boro Mending, Sashiko Embroidery, and Indigo Dyeing.
These traditional Japanese techniques are inspired by Mottainai, a centuries-old philosophy that embraces respecting resources, reducing waste, and cherishing what we already have. Through this mindful approach, you’ll learn to transform worn fabrics and garments into beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces.
In this session, you’ll dive into Boro Mending, where layered patching and stitching create intricate, meaningful textures. We’ll also explore Sashiko embroidery, using simple running stitches to strengthen and embellish fabric with geometric patterns. Plus, experience the ancient art of Indigo Dyeing, adding unique shades of blue to your garments and textiles.
What to Bring:
Clothing or fabrics you’d like to repair, patch, or embellish.
Small garments (preferably natural fibers like cotton, linen, or hemp) for indigo dyeing.
No sewing machines—this experience is all about the mindful art of hand stitching and slow fashion.
